Colchester set to face Ipswich
The U's will travel to Portman Road on Saturday 25 July for the clash as part of their pre-season preparations, four days after Aston Villa visit the Weston Homes Community Stadium.
Wilnis, 38, who spent nine years at the Championship club before leaving for Grays at the end of last season, told the Colchester Gazette: "I'm really pleased and excited.
"It'll be a local derby, which will hopefully attract a decent crowd, and there should be a great atmosphere for what I'm sure will be a brilliant day."
