Colchester upset Charlton to reach FA Cup fourth round

League One strugglers Colchester caused an FA Cup third round upset after beating Championship club Charlton 2-1 to pile more misery on the Addicks.

George Moncur and Marvin Sordell scored the goals before Reza Ghoochannejhad pulled one back.

Sordell fired just wide and Addicks keeper Nick Pope denied Alex Gilbey before the Us took the lead just before the half-hour through Moncur, who finished brilliantly from inside the area after some impressive approach play by Gavin Massey and Sordell.

Charlton's Cristian Ceballos' low cross-shot struck the base of a post two minutes later but the visitors fell further behind in the 41st minute when Sordell ran onto Moncur's fine through pass and tucked home.

Pope saved Tom Eastman's crisp volley while at the other end, Jake Kean denied Simon Makienok just before half-time.

Pope had to make a good save from Moncur midway through the second half and substitute Macauley Bonne wasted a good late opportunity for Colchester.

And although Ghoochannejhad headed home a late goal for Charlton, it was not enough to prevent the Addicks from crashing out.
