Wordsworth leads U's from front

Colchester halted a run of three successive defeats and put the brakes on Bury's revival with a 2-0 home win.

Colchester took a 57th-minute lead through skipper Anthony Wordsworth, who headed in from close range from Jabo Ibehre's floated cross.

And the U's doubled their lead less than four minutes later through Freddie Sears, who fired in from 12 yards after fine approach play by Ian Henderson and Ibehre.

Bury went close with 20 minutes to go when defender Ethan Ebanks-Landell's effort came back off the crossbar from a corner, but substitute Clinton Morrison came close to making it 3-0 to Colchester before the end as the home side comfortably saw out a well-deserved victory.

Wordsworth and Henderson both went close for Colchester early on. Henderson's half-volley was palmed away by Bury goalkeeper Trevor Carson after half an hour, while Craig Eastmond also had a shot saved.

But U's goalkeeper John Sullivan turned away Dominic Poleon's fierce shot, while Tom Hopper fired just wide for Bury on the stroke of half-time.
