Vale up and running on the road

Port Vale secured their first league away victory since August after winning 2-1 at Colchester.

The visitors took the lead 10 minutes after half-time when Mark Marshall's tidy finish nestled inside the near post following Adam Yates' cross.

And the Valiants doubled their advantage four minutes later through substitute Colin Daniel, who scored less than a minute after coming on when he finished well from Marshall's assist.

Colchester's Gavin Massey hit the woodwork before Freddie Sears reduced the deficit with 12 minutes remaining when he tapped in from two yards after Macauley Bonne had headed Sanchez Watt's deep cross back across goal but Vale held on to win.

Sears went close early on while at the other end Colchester goalkeeper Sam Walker made a fine save to deny Ben Williamson and Marshall clattered the outside of a post.

Vale goalkeeper Chris Neal denied Massey before Sears squandered a great chance to give Colchester the lead when his penalty was saved low down by Neal, after Richard Duffy had fouled Massey in the area.
