Leon Clarke sends Bury up to third with second-half winner

Leon Clarke's second-half header secured Bury a 1-0 victory at fellow in-form side Colchester to extend their fine winning run to seven matches.

Colchester went close in the first half when Bury goalkeeper Rob Lainton made a magnificent save to keep out Joe Edwards' long-range effort.

Lainton also denied George Moncur but Bury were unfortunate not to take the lead just before half-time when Chris Hussey's excellent free-kick from the edge of the area rattled the woodwork.

Colchester started the second half well, with Lainton saving Marvin Sordell's long-range effort and also making a fine stop to deny Moncur, who only had the goalkeeper to beat.

Lainton also did brilliantly to foil Gavin Massey from point-blank range on the hour, while Colchester had a penalty appeal rejected after substitute Tom Pope appeared to handle Callum Harriott's cross in the area.

But Clarke headed in Joe Riley's searching delivery at the far post with 15 minutes remaining and it proved to be the winner as Bury maintained their superb form.
