EL Qualifiers review - Efficient Club Bruges win against Brondby

08 August 2014 11:46

Unlike their West-Flemish colleagues of Zulte-Waregem, Club Bruges had won their first leg of the third qualifying round, against Danish team Brondby, convincingly with 3-0 in the Jan Breydel stadium.

The first half gave us a very different Bruges, who were driven back by the Danes, eager to force a miracle return. They created chances, mostly over the right, where Bruges’ left-back played a less-than-convincing match. The goal nearly fell when Kahlenberg curled a free kick on the cross bar. Bruges had been given a warning, and reacted appropriately. Castillo scored a free kick on the 40th minute, and the club from West-Flanders took the reins from the home side.

In extra time, Bruges bagged their decisive goal. Newcomer Menegazzo has already hit the bar with a header, and netted his first of the season with a beautiful chip.

The game had been played in the first half, and the second half featured two teams unwilling to attack. Bruges kept the ball in the ranks, passing it around, with a slight chance now and then. Club finished the game a man light, Refaelov not wanting to risk his knee, which he has had problems with since last season. Game over for Brondby, and Club Bruges march on to the Europa League.
