Ismail Yakubu had given the Bees a deserved lead in the first half but Danny Hall's first goal for Chesterfield ensured the visitors were forced to settle for a point.
Richardson said: "It was a dreadful game, especially in the first half, and our performance was particularly poor.
"We were lethargic in the first half and we did not get started. It took the goal to spur us on but on a positive we've taken a point from a game we would probably have lost earlier in the season.
"We got the ball down a bit more in the second half and that's what was lacking in the first half. I thought we had complete control after the break and looked like we might nick all three points but with the way other results have gone it is a positive point, not a negative one."
