Stockport 1-1 Chesterfield: Report

Smalley spares Spireites' blushes Deane Smalley's second-half strike proved decisive as Chesterfield survived a scare to claim a 1-1 draw in their top-versus-bottom encounter against Stockport. In a dire first half, the only corner arrived after 34 minutes, whilst the first real opportunity on goal came with a minute left when Ian Morris's 35-yard effort for The Spireites slid past Matt Glennon's left hand post. The second half had to be better. And so it was, with end to end football making what had taken place before a distant memory. The Hatters, in particular, produced some stirring play, with Ishmel Demontagnac coming life to force a save from Tommy Lee and then setting up Stephen Husband and Tom Fisher. Not to be out-done, the visitors' Craig Davies hit the crossbar from a well-worked free kick. Sensing only their second home victory of the season, County went in front on 72 minutes when Paul Turnbull steered home a Greg Tansey lob, but Chesterfield equalised almost immediately through Dean Smalley's close-range header. Both sides continued to strive for a winner but in the end a draw was a fair result.
