Chesterfield manager Lee Richardson intends to keep his cards close to his chest after blaming media stories for missing out on a potential new signing.
The Spireites chief has handed new contracts to Barry Roche and Josh Law following the club's relegation from League One, but is keeping his transfer targets a closely-guarded secret.
He told the club's official website: "I'm talking to numerous players about coming to Chesterfield, but I won't tell you who they are at the moment.
"It looks like we've lost a player whose name was linked in the media with a move to Saltergate.
"I believe, thanks largely to that publicity, it alerted the other club and we think he's agreed terms there.
"So until something is signed sealed and delivered, I'll not be mentioning names.
"It's a cut-throat business at this time of year as we're in competition with other clubs to bring in quality players."
