Spireites rue Downes loss

Chesterfield boss Lee Richardson has voiced his displeasure at losing captain Aaron Downes to international duty with Australia for several weeks.

The 22-year-old missed two games for the Spireites due to his call-up by his country, but he failed to feature against North Korea and Lebanon before returning to England.

Richardson told the Derbyshire Times: "We all appreciate that it is an honour to be selected for your country and there are conventions in place stating that we have to release him for such matches.

"But we have a small squad and for them to take our captain and have him sit on the bench and not play him is a bit hard to take.

"We lost him for the best part of three weeks, it is a waste of our resources and he didn't play a game."
