Sheridan: We deserved to win
Chesterfield manager John Sheridan felt his side deserved to beat Sheffield Wednesday in the Johnstone`s Paint Trophy.
The Spireites were the better side throughout against their more illustrious neighbours and took the lead through Dean Morgan before Neil Mellor equalised. The League Two club then had two headed goals disallowed before the break, with replays showing the second from Craig Davies should have stood.
Davies put Chesterfield back in front but Marcus Tudgay scored at the second attempt after his penalty was saved by Tommy Lee to make it 2-2 and take the second round tie to a penalty shoot out, which the Owls won 8-7.
"It's a shame because I thought we should have won the game. Full credit to the players," said Sheridan, who had a successful stint at Hillsborough during his playing career. "I can take a lot of positives from the game. I thought we passed the ball well and we were a threat all night. Craig Davies was a handful and we caused them problems.
"I'm very pleased with the way we played and thought we deserved more. We've got to take that into our league programme now.
"Tommy (Lee) ended up missing a penalty, which was a shame because he made some world-class saves in the shoot-out. I bet it was a great game to watch for the neutrals."
