Sheridan unhappy at start
Chesterfield manager John Sheridan was unhappy with his side's first-half performance, despite the Spireites' amazing comeback in their 5-5 draw with Crewe at the B2net Stadium.
Crewe flew out of the blocks, and were 3-0 up after just 13 minutes with goals from Luke Murphy, Lee Bell and Byron Moore. Jack Lester pulled a goal back for the home team, but when Shaun Miller rounded Tommy Lee to make it 4-1, the game was as good as over.
Lester grabbed his second after the break, and when Danny Whittaker converted a 77th-minute penalty the comeback seemed to be on course.
Crewe, however, had other ideas and when Clayton Donaldson netted in the 80th minute. Chesterfield refused to throw in the towel, and after a second Whittaker spot-kick made it 5-4, Craig Clay capped an amazing game with a 25-yard equalizer deep into injury time.
Sheridan said: "It was very frustrating in the first half to concede four goals. All credit to Crewe, they were better than us and moved the ball well but I don't think we were at the races. We were sloppy and looked leggy. But in the second half, I do think we should have won the game with the chances we created and how we played."
He added: "I have to admit that when Crewe scored their fifth goal I thought it was over. We'd got it back to 4-3 and I thought the momentum was ours, we were really getting at them and we'd hit the bar and post. To come back from 4-1 whoever you are playing isn't going to happen many times in your career as a manager or player and I just want to praise the players for the character they showed."
