Sheridan praise for champions

John Sheridan saluted his Chesterfield side after they wrapped up a stunning season in style by beating Gillingham 3-1 to clinch the League Two title. Danny Whitaker's 15th goal of the season in the 54th minute put the hosts in front and although Cody McDonald replied, Jack Lester and Deane Smalley pounced late on to get the party started at the b2net Stadium. Success is fully deserved for the Spireites who will now be playing League One football next season having occupied top spot every week barring one since early October. Sheridan said: "I am especially pleased for the players, they have done everything we have asked of them. Not one player has given me a problem all season, everything we have asked them to try to do they have taken on board and given it a go. "Winning the league means you are remembered more than if you just win promotion and the players deserve to be remembered. "It is a very evenly matched league and we don't always get the credit at this level for the quality of football that's played."
