Chesterfield forward Adam Smith will not be fit enough to feature in next month's opening game of the season against Chester City.

The 22-year-old has not played since early February because of a tendon problem and was not able to take part in the start of pre-season training.

"Adam had work done on the tendon attached to his knee cap and could be a month away from joining the fray," said Spireites boss Lee Richardson.

Smith made his debut for the club in November 2002, but has gone on to start only 27 first-team matches since.
