Niven eyes brighter future
14 Jan 2009 - 14:38:13
Chesterfield midfielder Derek Niven is delighted and relieved to be back in training after undergoing treatment for testicular cancer.
The 25-year-old has not featured for the Spireites since mid-November, but is now back in training and able to look forward after a tough couple of months.
He told The Star: "I've been overwhelmed with the support and messages from fans and the manager, Lee Richardson, has been first-class.
"He phoned me every day and the lads at the club have been great. My family's been strong, my friends have been there for me and that's what's got me through it.
"I'm just grateful to be playing again. My next game is my 200th (league game) and I'm going to enjoy every game with relish.
"The experience has given me a different outlook on life, I'll not take as much for granted.
"I'll look forward more rather than dwell on things and hopefully it will all make me a better player and a better person."
