Bolton Wanderers midfielder Derek Niven has agreed to extend his loan spell with Chesterfield to a second month.

The 20-year-old arrived at Saltergate in early December and has been instrumental in the Spireites' improved recent form, as they recorded a four-game unbeaten run before crashing to a 7-0 defeat at Plymouth last time out.

Manager Roy McFarland was delighted by Niven's decision, telling the club's official website: "It is no secret that, if it were ever possible, I would love Derek Niven to be at the club on a longer-term basis.

"For the moment I'm pleased that Derek has decided to stay with us for a second month and that Bolton have agreed that he can."

Niven is yet to break into the first-team picture at Bolton and his five appearances for Chesterfield represent his first experience of senior football in England, although he did make one appearance for Raith Rovers during his time as a trainee at Stark's Park.
