Chesterfield boss Roy McFarland hopes to extend Peter Holmes' loan spell at Saltergate as he attempts to lift the Spireites away from trouble near the foot of the League One table.
Saturday's home defeat to Bournemouth left McFarland's side only three points above the relegation zone, but the experienced manager hopes he can persuade Luton Town to allow Holmes to remain in Derbyshire.
"We're in touch with Luton but they've asked us to wait," said the former Derby County defender.
"We'd like to extend his loan but that's up to Luton, who may favour another month, with the right to recall him during that month. I think Holmesy is keen to stay here."
The 26-year-old has made four appearances for Chesterfield since arriving at the club last month.
