Chesterfield defender Jamie Lowry faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after contracting glandular fever.
The 19-year-old may not play again this season after being told to initally rest for four weeks after receiving the results of blood tests.
Spireites boss Roy McFarland told the club's official website: "We're really disappointed for Jamie because he's made a real impact on the squad.
"He recently got the chance for some early first-team experience and did a decent job for us in some key matches.
"The important thing now is to ensure Jamie makes a full recovery and, as we don't intend to rush things, it may mean he could be out for the rest of the season."
Lowry make his debut for the club when coming on as a substitute in the Carling Cup win against West Ham United and has gone on to make five more appearances for the League One side.
