Hammers boss earns support

25 Oct 2006 - 10:39:14

Chesterfield manager Roy McFarland has leaped to the defence of Alan Pardew after the Spireites dumped West Ham out of the Carling Cup on Tuesday night.

The League One club upset their Premiership opponents 2-1 in the third round at Saltergate, but McFarland was keen to hand his backing to the under-fire Hammers boss in the aftermath of the famous victory.

"It's frustrating for Alan at the moment and he's desperate to win a football match," said McFarland.

"I know he is, but at the moment nothing is going right for him.

"But he has to persist and have that confidence within himself that he can turn it around.

"I saw nobody slacking in their side and his team looked strong and worked hard."

Meanwhile, on the victory he added: "Hopefully we'll get another big team and whether it's home or away we're not particularly bothered.

"But I feel certain that Sky will come back and I'll be disappointed if they don't.

"Whichever way, provided we get a good draw, we really can't lose."
