FA snub Kovacs appeal

Wednesday Feb 22 2006 09:37

Chesterfield's Hungarian defender Janos Kovacs will serve a one-match ban after the FA rejected the club's appeal against his red card against Southend.

Referee Darren Deadman deemed that Kovacs was guilty of a deliberate handball in the box, which resulted in him issuing a red card and awarding a penalty which Freddy Eastwood fired in to set the Shrimpers up for a thrilling 4-3 win.

However, the club felt the referee made a mistake and were confident the decision would be overturned once the FA had reviewed the evidence on offer.

Despite that the FA upheld the sending-off and Kovacs will now miss one game.

A club spokesman said: "The appeal has been rejected and the club are shocked and amazed.

"In a case of such compelling video and photographic evidence, the outcome questions the point of having appeals."
