Downes set for lengthy absence

Chesterfield defender Aaron Downes will play no more football this year after being told he has ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament which requires surgery.

The 23-year-old Australian faces up to nine months on the sidelines with the injury.

Spireites boss Lee Richardson confirmed to the club's official website: "We'd hoped the injury wouldn't be so serious so we're all very disappointed for Aaron as he was having such a great season."

Downes has made 174 appearances for the club since making his first-team debut in 2004.
