Downes handed reassurance

Chesterfield have handed central defender Aaron Downes a new two-year deal.

The 23-year-old Australian will now stay with the Spireites until June 2011.

Downes is currently recovering from anterior cruciate ligament damage and could be sidelined for up to nine months.

Manager Lee Richardson told the club's official website: "Aaron's been in great form this season and I'm delighted that the club have moved quickly to reassure him that his future is with the Spireites.

"He's a fit young lad and there's every expectation that he'll fully recover from his injury."
