    Currie opts for Spireites

    16 Jul 2008 - 10:21:41

Chesterfield have emerged as the surprise winners of the race to sign veteran midfielder Darren Currie.

Currie, 33, had been expected to rejoin former club Brighton & Hove Albion after leaving Luton Town following the end of his contract.

But the former West Ham United trainee has now agreed a three-year contract at Saltergate and left Albion boss Micky Adams furious with his decision to snub a return to the south coast club.

"He used us as a tool simply to get a better deal for himself at Chesterfield, but while I am disappointed, I'm not that surprised," he said.

Meanwhile, Chesterfield manager Lee Richardson added: "I am delighted that Darren has agreed to join us."
