Chesterfield have swooped to sign Macclesfield striker Martin Gritton, despite the news that Jamie Ward is to remain at the club.
Chesterfield were resigned to losing Ward to Barnsley and had lined up Gritton as a replacement for their prize asset.
However, a move to Oakwell fell through due to a snag over personal terms.
Chesterfield have decided to follow up on their interest on Gritton and the two could line up together when the Spireites host Rochdale on Saturday.
Gritton has signed a two-and-a-half year contract at Saltergate after an undisclosed fee between the two clubs was agreed.
The former Plymouth, Grimsby and Lincoln player made 56 appearances for Macclesfield, hitting the net 16 times.
