Smith injury rocks Chesterfield

Chesterfield have been dealt a blow ahead of the visit of Plymouth with the news that defender Nathan Smith will miss the remainder of the season with a foot injury.

Smith suffered the problem during the first half of the Spireites' away win at Oxford last weekend and missed the defeat at Torquay on Tuesday night while the club's medical staff ascertained the extent of the problem.

Scans have shown that the left-back has broken a bone at the top of his foot.

Manager Paul Cook has a handful of other players, who he did not name, nursing knocks and he will assess their fitness nearer the game.

"There's a lot of ifs and buts and bumps and bruises and we'll probably have to wait until after training on Friday to see what we've got," said Cook.

Armand Gnanduillet's knocks are not clearing up and the young striker will remain on the sidelines.

However, Craig Clay has resumed training following a hernia operation last month but this game will come too soon for the midfielder.

Plymouth defender Anthony Charles will miss their clash with manager John Sheridan's former club.

The former Northampton centre back suffered a recurrence of a groin injury that he suffered earlier this month in the 2-0 win at Southend.

Paul Wotton replaced Charles in the first half of that vital victory on Tuesday night and he could get the nod from the start.

Striker Warren Feeney, who picked up an ankle injury in Sheridan's first match in charge in mid-January, has returned to training along with homegrown defender Curtis Nelson. The youngster had been sidelined by a persistent groin problem since late January.

Captain Conor Hourihane heads into this match on nine yellow cards, one away from two-game suspension.

Argyle are now two points clear of the relegation zone after suffering just one defeat in their last six games.
