Chesterfield 4-1 Wycombe: Match Report

01 March 2011 22:29
Spireites too strong for Wycombe Chesterfield surged into a nine-point lead at the top of League Two as they crushed the challenge of second-placed Wycombe 4-1. The high tempo of Chesterfield's performance put Wycombe under intense pressure from the start and the leaders were rewarded in the 28th minute when right-winger Deane Smalley swept in his ninth goal of the season from a corner. Danny Whittaker took his tally to 13 from the penalty spot after Jack Lester had been wrestled over by Alan Bennett, while Wanderers keeper Nikki Bull was booked for kicking the ball out of the ground as his side staged a furious protest about the decision from referee Steve Rushton. Chesterfield took only a minute of the second half to go further ahead, Lester turning inside three defenders to drill in his 10th goal of the campaign. Jon-Paul Pittman pulled one back for Wycombe with a 15-yard volley in the 80th minute, but Chesterfield restored their three-goal margin seven minutes later when top scorer Craig Davies drove home after great work from substitute Scott Boden. Crude tackles and indiscipline earned Wycombe four bookings while there was added gloss on Chesterfield's victory with the news third-placed Rotherham had only drawn and fourth-placed Shrewsbury had lost.
