Doyle hat-trick flattens Iron

Eoin Doyle put a missed penalty behind him to score a second-half hat-trick as Chesterfield beat Scunthorpe 4-1.

Doyle hit the crossbar after Paddy Madden had put Scunthorpe ahead, but he twice finished superbly before scoring from the spot, while Sam Morsy completed the rout in the closing minutes.

Sam Clucas was close to scoring a debut goal with an overhead kick in the 14th minute, but Chesterfield lost play-maker Gary Roberts eight minutes later with a recurrence of a hamstring injury.

There were few openings in the first half but the game came to life 30 seconds after the break when Sean McAllister's shot broke to Madden, who turned and scored from 10 yards.

Doyle missed his first penalty in the 51st minute after Miguel Llera handled, but made amends four minutes later when he converted Clucas' cross at the near post.

Doyle scored again in the 64th minute when Daniel Johnson put him through and made no mistake from the spot in the 73rd minute after Niall Canavan had tripped him.

Morsy broke clear to score a fourth for the home side from the edge of the penalty area in the 89th minute.
