Chesterfield beat Bury to secure survival

Chesterfield confirmed their place in League One next season with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Bury at the Proact Stadium.

A first-half penalty from Jay O'Shea and a deflected Lee Novak strike put Chesterfield in charge before Dan Gardner sealed the win they needed to avoid relegation.

O'Shea had gone close with a 25-yard free-kick before he beat Chris Neal from the spot in the 29th minute after Cian Bolger had blocked Gary Liddle's run into the box.

Neal pushed away a shot from O'Shea in the 40th minute and Ollie Banks struck a post before Chesterfield enjoyed a big slice of luck in first-half stoppage time.

Novak's shot from 25 yards took a huge deflection to leave Neal with no chance and Bury reacted to a poor display by making three changes for the second half.

Danny Mayor wasted a chance to pull a goal back in the 53rd minute and Chesterfield made the game safe in the 71st minute with a classic counter-attack.

Bury were caught upfield at a corner and Gardner raced away to exchange passes with O'Shea before firing low past Neal.
