Doncaster survival hopes hit by Chesterfield leveller

Doncaster's slim hopes of staying in Sky Bet League One suffered another blow when Chesterfield hit back to earn a point in a 1-1 draw at the Proact Stadium.

It looked good for Rovers when Tommy Rowe fired them into an early lead but Gboly Ariyibi quickly replied for Chesterfield, who moved closer to safety.

The Spireites conceded early on Saturday and they were behind again in the sixth minute when Rowe was left unmarked at the back post to convert Gary McSheffrey's corner.

But Doncaster were pegged back in the 18th minute when Remi Matthews could only parry Jay O'Shea's low drive and Ariyibi netted the rebound from 10 yards.

The visitors should have regained the lead in the 43rd minute but Andy Williams headed wide from four yards out and Andy Butler headed over from a corner in the 65th minute.

Doncaster pressed hard for the win but Chesterfield defended well and McSheffrey's stoppage-time free-kick from the edge of the area was too high to clinch the victory Rovers desperately needed.
