Chesterfield 1-0 Stevenage: Match Report

15 January 2011 17:14
Cup glory forgotten for fallen Stevenage Stevenage came back to earth after their FA Cup triumph over Newcastle when a Drew Talbot goal gave Chesterfield a 1-0 victory. Talbot struck just before half time but the League Two leaders had to withstand sustained second half pressure before celebrating another win. A strong wind dominated the first half and chances were scare until Michael Bostwick had a 25-yard shot turned behind by Tommy Lee in the 33rd minute. Craig Davies was foiled by Chris Day four minutes later but the Stevenage goalkeeper was beaten in the 42nd minute when Talbot's 20-yard shot crept inside a post. Stevenage took the game to Chesterfield in the second half and only some desperate defending kept the visitors out. Chris Beardsley forced Lee into a full length save and Darius Charles just failed to connect with a low cross from Lawrie Wilson. But Deane Smalley should have settled it when Day's poor kick set him up but a heavy touch allowed the keeper to recover.
