Chester chairman Stephen Vaughan fears City's bid to sign Doncaster Rovers striker Gregg Blundell is on the verge of failure.
Blundell looks certain to leave Belle Vue ahead of the new campaign, but Carlisle United have joined the race to sign the 29-year-old after it emerged he had still not agreed personal terms with Chester.
Vaughan told the Daily Post: "We offered a fee to Doncaster that we understand is higher than Carlisle's. However, the stumbling block is personal terms.
"We have agreed to virtually every request made by Gregg, but there are a couple of sticking points that I'm afraid we won't budge on.
"If we do complete a deal with Gregg it would be a record for Chester City, but we will now have to monitor events over the next few days."
