Famous Five Photo Auction

13 May 2010 10:52
The Chester Chronicle have teamed up with Blues legend Gary Talbot to offer supporters the chance to get their hands on one of the most prized pieces of Chester memorabilia. Gary is auctioning off the iconic photograph of Chester’s ‘Famous Five’ forward line to raise funds for City Fans United and the reformed Chester FC. The classic shot of Gary, Mike Metcalf, Jimmy Humes, Elfed Morris and Hugh Ryden was taken to immortalise their incredible feat of scoring 138 of Chester’s 141 goals in the 1964-65 season. Following a successful Chronicle appeal last year to help Gary track down former team-mate Ryden, the framed image now features all five signatures of the net-busting quintet, making the photograph a major collector’s item. Gary, 72, of Eccleston, said: “I wanted to raise money for Chester FC and I thought this would be the best way of doing it. All the boys are very happy about what I’m doing.” The picture will be one of the most sought after items auctioned at the ‘125 Years of Chester FC’ celebration bash at Chester Racecourse on Saturday, June 12. But the Chronicle are inviting advance bids now. Anyone unable to attend the big night still has a chance of winning Gary’s prize – thanks to The Chronicle. You can send sealed bids by post or by email but they must reach the Chronicle by the deadline of noon on Friday, June 11. The Chronny will take the highest bid they receive, re-sealed, to the anniversary bash and it will be opened at the end of the auction. If your bid is higher than the best one on the night, the picture will be all yours. Competition for Gary’s picture is sure to be fierce – so make sure your sealed bids are high ones! Sealed bids must include your full name, address, contact number and signature and will be legally binding. Post them to The Chester Chronicle, Sportsdesk, Chronicle House, Commonhall Street, Chester, CH1 2AA, or email chester.sport@cheshirenews.co.uk
