Knee surgery for Caines
26 Feb 2008 - 09:38:43
Cheltenham Town manager Keith Downing has praised Gavin Caines after confirming that the central defender will not play again this season.
The 24-year-old is set to have surgery on the injured knee which has been troubling him since the start of 2008.
Caines has continued to play with the injury, but Downing accepts that now is the right time to have the operation.
The Robins boss told the club's official website: "Gavin's done terrifically well under very difficult circumstances.
"He's stuck to his task and we've had to manage him because he hasn't been able to train properly.
"It would have been nice if he could see out the rest of the season, but it's come to a point where he needs to have the operation now.
"Gavin's attitude has typified the football club - getting through things with grit and determination - and he's shown a lot of that this season."
