Cheltenham Town defender Shane Duff has been given until the end of the week to agree a new contract at Whaddon Road.
The 27-year-old's current deal runs out at the end of the month and boss Martin Allen is not prepared to allow the situation to drag on.
He told BBC Radio Gloucestershire: "He has the right to shop around to see if any other clubs will take him and maybe pay him more money.
"Shane Duff's shown that he's a leader and he'd be a good person to help bring our younger players on."
Northern Ireland Under-21 international Duff has been with the Robins for nearly a decade, making well over 200 appearances in all competitions.
