Yates relieved as Robins pass Cobblers test

Cheltenham manager Mark Yates was relieved to see his side claim a narrow 1-0 victory over 10-man Northampton. Cobblers defender Dean Beckwith was dismissed after he was adjudged to have stamped on Shaun Jeffers in the 22nd minute. And although the Robins initially struggled to break Northampton down, Brian Smikle slotted home after reacting to Jeff Goulding's delicate flick on the hour mark to give Cheltenham all three points. Yates said: "When you play against 10 men it can be really tough, people just expect you to steamroller teams, and that doesn't happen. "Northampton are a strong, competitive side who made it difficult for us and looked lively on the break. "In the second half we upped it and it changed the game. We got one goal and should have killed it off with three or four other good chances we had. Because we didn't get that second goal we were on a knife edge for the last five minutes."
