The 18-year-old winger, a first-year professional, has struggled to string quality performances together so far this term, impressing admirably before then chipping in with a disappointing performance.
And he knows what he must achieve if he is to firmly establish himself in Martin Allen's plans.
"My confidence is coming back and I want to show what I can do again," Watkins told the Gloucestershire Echo.
"I think I have got the ability, I just need to be more consistent.
"The gaffer told me to play with a smile on my face and that is what I have tried to do."
