Robins frustrate wasteful Vale

Port Vale wasted several chances as they were held to a goalless draw at Cheltenham. Cheltenham had a penalty shout turned down in the eighth minute when Jeff Goulding appeared to be held back by Gareth Owen and Steve Elliott headed wide from a corner in the 10th minute as the hosts started brightly. Home keeper Scott Brown tipped over from Vale's John McCombe and Anthony Griffith shot wide for the visitors, who should have taken the lead in the 20th minute when Justin Richards beat the offside trap only to be denied by Brown's legs. Gary Roberts went close for Vale and a Marc Richards ball in deflected off Cheltenham's Andy Gallinagh on to his own post. It was more of the same in the second half with Justin Richards firing wide in the 47th minute before Marc Richards dragged a shot badly wide six minutes later. Roberts and Justin Richards, again, missed further chances as Vale were frustrated.
