Spireites give Robins what four

Cheltenham crashed to their worst home defeat of the season as rampant Chesterfield romped to a 4-1 victory to cement their place at the top of the League Two table.

The Spireites had wrapped up the points by half-time, with four goals in a mere seven minutes doing the damage.

Dan Gardner drilled home a 22nd-minute opener after collecting a Gary Roberts pass, and the former Swindon midfielder also set up the next just two minutes later for Eoin Doyle, who rifled his shot high into Scott Brown's net.

A mistake by Robins right-back Mitch Brundle gifted the ball to Ollie Banks and he thundered his shot into the top corner for the visitors' third after 26 minutes, before Liam Cooper glanced in a header from a 29th-minute corner.

Jermaine McGlashan was denied by Spireites goalkeeper Tommy Lee at the start of the second half and, with the visitors content to sit on their lead, the Robins began to exert themselves on the game.

Byron Harrison headed home a corner to reduce the arrears after 57 minutes and they would have edged closer still had Ashley Vincent and Terry Gornell not missed gilt-edged chances later in the half.
