Joe Martin's free-kick sees Stevenage edge out Cheltenham

Joe Martin's late fine free-kick was enough to earn Stevenage a 1-0 win at Cheltenham.

There was very little in the way of goalmouth action in the first half, with Matt Godden seeing a low shot blocked by Will Boyle at the near post, but neither goalkeeper was seriously tested.

Danny Wright forced Joe Fryer into action in in the 63rd minute with a shot from the edge of the box which the goalkeeper did well to turn away low to his left.

Wright turned sharply in the box after Carl Winchester's pass two minutes later, but his effort was off target as Cheltenham pressed for a goal.

Bristol City loanee Joe Morrell made room for a shot on his Cheltenham debut, but could not keep it down in the 78th minute.

Cheltenham had looked the more likely to snatch a winner but left-back Martin's free-kick won it for Stevenage with eight minutes remaining after Jordan Cranston fouled Alex Samuel 20 yards out as Darren Sarll's men continued their unbeaten start.
