Dover over Cheltenham hurdle

Non-leaguers Dover shocked Cheltenham to book their place in the FA Cup third round thanks to a late goal from skipper Connor Essam.

And it was no more than the Conference side deserved having rattled the upright just moments earlier.

Dover had started the game the better with a looping volley from Nick Deverdics being tipped over the bar by Robins keeper Trevor Carson in the 16th minute, with Tom Murphy forcing another good save moments later after he had found space inside the area.

Cheltenham then pushed on with Craig Braham-Barrett being denied before Terry Gornell saw his shot deflected onto the upright on the half-hour.

Both sides had chances to break the deadlock early in the second period, Tom Bonner skying an effort for the visitors while Jason Taylor missed the target at the other end following a good passing move.

But the final stages belonged to Chris Kinnear's side with Tyrone Sterling crashing an effort against the post on 82 minutes before being cleared for a corner.

It was from the resulting cross that the ball was worked to Essam who threaded his shot beyond Carson to send Dover through.
