Captain marvel Ainsworth to the fore

Wycombe captain Gareth Ainsworth scored the decisive goal as Wycombe took another step towards promotion with a 2-1 win over Cheltenham at Adams Park. Ainsworth's thunderous shot added to Ben Strevens' poacher's goal in the first half and, although Wesley Thomas pulled on back for the Robins, the Chairboys ran out deserved winners. Wycombe went ahead in the 28th minute when Matt Bloomfield's corner was flicked on by Alan Bennett and Strevens turned it in from close range at the back post. Cheltenham's first threat on goal came through a powerful volley from the edge of the area by David Bird which was well parried away by Chairboys goalkeeper Nikki Bull. The hosts doubled their lead nine minutes into the second half when Kevin Betsy's cross ran to Ainsworth and the veteran belted it first time past Simon Brown who had no chance. But the game was alive again within two minutes when a diagonal ball found Thomas and his effort from a narrow angle squeezed through Bull's legs at the near post.
