Why Mark Clattenburg should not referee the Premier leagues high profile games

Once again one of the so called ‘top referees’ ruined one of the biggest fixtures of the Premier league season. It seems whenever Mark Clattenburg takes to the field he is more interested in himself becoming the centre of attention than the football match itself.

Chelsea were pressing and even with ten men looked as if they could nick a winner until Clattenburg decided to make the task even harder. Fernando Torres went down after a challenge from Jonny Evans who even admitted to making contact with the Spanish striker. Torres got a second yellow for diving and left Chelsea with nine men which ultimately cost the London side the points.

Javier Hernandez netted the winner from an offside position which also would of hurt Chelsea and is another cry for technology to be brought into football to help out the officials.

It was only 12 years ago that Clattenburg made his football league debut as a referee and is now officiating some of the highest profile games in the country. It only took him six years to become a registered FIFA referee. Over his career he has had several controversial moments in the biggest games which have led to people questioning his ability to referee. In 2007, during the Merseyside derby he was about to book Tony Hibbert but after words with Steven Gerrard he changed his mind and gave him a red card. According to sources close to Manchester City in 2009 he also made comments regarding Craig Bellamy which infuriated Mark Hughes at the time. In 2010, Nani fell to the floor and handled the ball looking for a penalty. Heurelho Gomes placed the ball down for the free-kick but Clattenburg had not blown his whistle and Nani ran back to put the ball into an empty net which he let stand.

Allegations from yesterday’s game also state that he used ‘inappropriate’ language towards two Chelsea players and its time that the football association do something about this referee who is clearly incompetent. It seems whenever he officiates a fixture with high pressure and a huge viewing figures he seems to make the wrong decisions and should not be allowed to officiate the country’s biggest games.
