Why Diego Costa is a perfect fit for Chelsea

On Tuesday Chelsea finally confirmed the £32million signing of Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid on a five year deal.

With Samuel Eto'o departing and Demba Ba set to follow in move to Besiktas, Chelsea need a new front line and manager Jose Mourinho sees Costa as the man to fire his side to Premier League glory next year.

Apart from the exception of a certain Didier Drogba, Chelsea have built quite a reputation for big money striker flops in the Premier league era. Chelsea are hoping to fill the void left by the Ivorian since he left the club back in 2012.

Fernando Torres has only scored twenty Premier League goals during his three years at the club; the London club have been looking for a “killer striker” for some time. They hope Costa can replicate his 36 goals he scored last year.

Costa has many similarities to Drogba. Both players can bully and torment defenders, but also have the power to bulldoze their way through any stubborn defence, which was something Chelsea struggled to do last year. Costa’s ability to hold up play was a recurring theme in La Liga last season.

He only needs one chance to score too, so he could be the Premier league's most clinical striker next year with creative players like Oscar, Willian, Eden Hazard, Andre Schurrle, Mohamed Salah and new signing Cesc Fabregas behind him creating chances for him at will.

It may take a few games for Costa to acclimatize to life in England, but one of the biggest failures of Fernando Torres was that he simply did not adjust to Chelsea’s style of play, while Chelsea also failed to find a system to get the best out of Torres.

Meanwhile Costa seems like a perfect match for Chelsea. With one world class striker having already left the Premier League this season, another one has certainly just joined to make his new employers one of the favourites to lift silverware this season.
