Why Chelsea's Jose Mourinho needs to show his maturity and avoid confrontation
Recruitment
The latest suggestion is that Jose Mourinho will have a budget of £150 million
at Chelsea,
although that would appear extraordinarily high without a significant chunk
of money being brought in through sales such as David Luiz. The even bigger
question is how much say will Mourinho have in spending the budget?
He has worked hard at the clubs he has been at to try to gain control of
transfer policy, particularly at Real Madrid where he initially won a power
struggle with technical director Jorge Valdano.
Mourinho is an old-fashioned manager in that respect, eschewing the trend for
a head coach and director of football. His battles at Chelsea in the past
have often centred around recruitment, although the war he waged over Andrei
Shevchenko’s signing was disingenuous considering he had not balked at the
move when first mooted.
This time round Mourinho will certainly be allowed to buy a striker – Stefan
Jovetic, Edin Dzeko and Edinson Cavani are possibilities – and the
Portuguese manager will look to add height and power to his team. André
Schürrle should finally arrive from Bayer Leverkusen while signing Xabi
Alonso would give him the deep-lying playmaker he often favours. A central
defender is another priority.
