Just what was the point of Chelsea signing Thibaut Courtois? The young Beligum goalkeeper has just extended his loan spell with Atletico Madrid for another season. It's what the 6ft 6 inches tall stopper wanted of course as if Chelsea had decided they wanted him to rightlfully return to Stamford Bridge, he would have been warming the bench while Petr Cech operated between the sticks.Courtois signed a five-year-deal from Genk in 2011 and has yet to wear his gloves in anger in a Chelsea shirt."I'm very happy because it's what I was wanting," the 21-year-old he is reported to have said."I've always said that next season I wanted to continue at Atletico and compete in a competition as important as the Champions League, having achieved qualification in such a brilliant way."I've only thought about continuing to enjoy the incredible fans that we have and I hope that we can continue giving them plenty of joy." Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho will know at first hand the quality of Courtois as he proved pivotal in Atletico Copa del Rey success over Mour's Real last season. It's unclear how much of a say the new Chelsea manager had in the decision to allow the goalkeeper another season in Spain, but it certainly prevented a selection headache for him. Cech, the undesputed No1 at Chelsea for years would no doubt have felt the while hot collar of Courtois breathing down his neck had he come back. Chelsea got rid of their dead weight goalkeepers Hilario and Ross Turnbull this season and will rely on the emerging talent of Jamal Blackman as cover for Cech. The England Under-19 stopper is highly regarded among the powers that be at SW6.
