Villas-Boas: We played well...
Chelsea actually thrashed Genk Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas was understandably delighted by his team's thrashing of Genk in the champions League last night. A 5-0 victory was the Blues best result in the tournament. But the Portuguese played down any justifiably sense of triumphalism. He said: "We were very happy to score early - it put us into a comfortable position in the match. "Then they had a good 10 minutes but we showed resilience and ended the half by scoring two more - I'm very happy with the performance. "The commitment of the team was good, we kept our concentration and focus for the full 90 minutes. "Now, if we win in Genk we can qualify but that depends what happens in the other match. We may need to get a point at Bayer Leverkusen. "To avoid surprises in the group, we need three points at Genk - but it's never easy especially as we will have just played Arsenal in the league. Villas-Boas then went into familiar territory: "It's all about the team performance," he said. "Fernando Torres found good goal-scoring positions easily but we like to talk about the collective not individuals." That's easy when he can call upon the firepower he has in his squad. "But we are able to choose from the best strikers and Fernando got chosen today. But all strikers have been playing well. "The most important time of the season is last three months when the chase for the trophies collide. "For now, we just want to qualify as quickly as possible." Then forgetting all about the "collective", Villas-Boas sang the praises of young Oriol Romeu. "What to see from Oriol is what you get from the Barcelona school," said Villas-Boas. "He is showing his individual skills and then takes them into team objectives. "But Mikel and Raul are doing it too. "Oriol assumes different body positions than the others as he receives the ball from our defence and he wants the ball and organises the team - that comes out from his training at Barcelona." Genk boss Mario Been was just happy the game was over. He said: "Chelsea were in a totally different level to us and we knew it. "Twenty four other teams have lost here, they have too much quality - but we gave away goals too easily. "After 10 minutes it's two nil and we had wanted to keep it 0-0 for first 20 minutes. But we had problems in defence and we lost to a great side. "We did better in the second half - maybe Chelsea slowed down in the second half - I'm just happy with it just being 5-0 nil and not worse. "Chelsea has real possibilities to win the Champions League but Barcelona and Real Madrid are also big teams - we simply are not at that level "We made too many mistakes especially in the end zone. "We need to perform better in the return match but we are in a bad shape. Despite that I saw lots of good things too. "When you make a mistake its a goal at this level. "I have confidence in my team and we will be a team again in the league for Saturday. "Hopefully I will have some players back for the return game against Chelsea but we will have to wait and see."
