Former AC Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid boss Fabio Capello claims Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich wants Marco van Basten to be the new manager at Stamford Bridge.
Avram Grant was placed in charge of the Blues following Jose Mourinho's shock departure last week, but Capello believes it is only a short-term appointment.
Van Basten was at Old Trafford on Sunday to watch Chelsea's 2-0 defeat to Manchester United, prompting speculation that the current boss of the Netherlands team is in line to replace Grant.
Capello believes van Basten's name was put forward to Abramovich by Chelsea's technical director Frank Arnesen.
"Arnesen wants van Basten to take over and has already recommended him to Abramovich," Capello told The Sun.
"Frank and Marco know each other well from their time in Dutch football."
Van Basten, who starred for Ajax and AC Milan during a playing career that was cut short by injury in 1993, has been manager of the Netherlands since 2004.
