The true test of Manchester United's power in the transfer market will be revealed in January in the battle to sign Everton teenager Jack Rodwell.

United have spent only £20million of the £80m they received from Real Madrid for Cristiano Ronaldo, but manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been told the club will only spend if the opportunity is too important to ignore.

United target: Everton star Jack Rodwell

Rodwell, just 18 and one of English football's brightest prospects, certainly fits the bill, but the added complication for United is that their main rivals to sign him are Chelsea.

The London club are eager to do business in January after the two-window transfer ban imposed by FIFA in the Gael Kakuta scandal was suspended pending their appeal.
