With Brazilian Alex still out injured and Branislav Ivanovic being his only replacement, Carlo Ancelotti is desperate to bolster Chelsea's defensive options before the transfer window ends.

The former AC Milan boss has considered a number of possible recruits but his favourite appears to be highly-rated Benfica youngster David Luiz.

Some reports are claiming that the Blues are closing in on a £21 million deal for the central defender, who could help improve the club's uncharacteristically shaky back-four.

Chelsea's title rivals Arsenal are also in the market for a new central defender as Arsene Wenger struggles to cope with a mini injury crisis.

The Frenchman would prefer Bolton's Gary Cahill but is unwilling to pay the £20m which Owen Coyle is demanding. He has therefore turned his attention to Blackburn man Christopher Samba.

Samba is keen to leave Ewood Park after the controversial takeover by Venky's and would relish the chance to play Champions League football. He could cost up to £6m.

Fulham have entered the race to sign Southampton wonderkid Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Liverpool winger Ryan Babel is on the verge of a move to Hoffenheim.

Real Madrid could make a big-money move for Arsenal forward Robin van Persie.

Everton striker James Vaughan could be set to move to Celtic on loan for the rest of the season.
