Torres on brink of Blues switch

Liverpool have finally agreed a fee with Chelsea for the sale of striker Fernando Torres after days of speculation about the transfer. The fee has not been undisclosed but is believed to be a British transfer record of £50million. Torres, 26, has now been given permission to speak to the Stamford Bridge club and undergo a medical and neither is expected to provide a stumbling block to the deal. Chelsea had a £35million bid turned down on Thursday but that set off a chain of events which saw the Spain international ask for a transfer and Liverpool reject it before ultimately accepting an improved bid from the Londoners. That was only possible after they too had an offer, believed to be in the region of £35million, accepted for Newcastle striker Andy Carroll. The 22-year-old arrived at the club's Melwood training ground earlier on Monday evening to undergo a medical after he too handed in a transfer request as he wanted the opportunity to move to the Merseysiders.
